Engineering the largest mining move in Africa during Covid
Overview:
As part of Kenmare’s expansion strategy, Hatch studied the options for the development of the Pilivili resource at Kenmare’s Moma mine in Northern Mozambique. The studies indicated that relocating the existing mining and processing infrastructure were the most viable in terms of capital expenditure and risk. The project commenced in 2020 with the development of a 23 km purpose-built road.
At the height of the project, the covid pandemic hit.. The team adapted the execution strategy and managed to complete the largest mining move in Africa in 2019. The relocated plant was successfully commissioned within the downtime constraints of the mine, allowing Kenmare to meet their project production expansion plans..
