Alberta, Canada - Hatch and X-energy have entered into a strategic partnership to revolutionize energy systems in North America by demonstrating the feasibility of retrofitting thermal power plants with small modular reactors (SMRs). The groundbreaking study will evaluate the potential of converting a TransAlta fossil-fueled electricity generation site into a nuclear power plant using an Xe-100 small modular reactor. The study will examine the economic, technological, and regulatory dimensions of such a transformation, establishing a framework for pioneering a nuclear project in Alberta.

The insights gained from this study will enable informed decisions regarding subsequent engineering, design, and site-specific work, setting the stage for Alberta’s first operational SMR. Hatch, as the study lead and project manager, will leverage our extensive expertise to support X-energy in the preparation and delivery of this comprehensive study. This partnership will ensure a robust evaluation of SMR potential in Alberta, encompassing existing energy infrastructure, the integration of renewable energy sources, and societal acceptance of these transformative technologies.

“Working together, with X-energy and TransAlta, we will deliver valuable insights and recommendations that align with Emissions Reduction Alberta's objectives to innovate and decarbonize Alberta's energy sector,” shared Mario Pieries, Global Director, Nuclear at Hatch.
“Hatch’s role in this project exemplifies our dedication to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the energy sector. By collaborating with X-energy, we are not only envisioning a sustainable future – we are actively engineering it. This project has the potential to set a precedent for energy innovation worldwide,” says Karim Kassaby, senior nuclear engineer at Hatch.

This initiative aligns with the recent announcement by the Government of Alberta, which is investing $33.7 million in thirteen projects through Emissions Reduction Alberta’s Reshaping Energy Systems funding competition. These projects, representing approximately $88 million in public and private investment, aim to reduce emissions and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable energy grid in Alberta.

Hatch’s involvement in such initiatives underscores our commitment to pioneering sustainable energy solutions and showcases our expertise in leading complex projects that pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
