Sylvie Lamarre receives Honoris Genius Award from the OIQ
Montreal, Canada—Sylvie Lamarre, Hatch’s regional engineering director for Eastern Canada, has received the Honoris Genius Award from the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (Quebec Engineering Board, or the OIQ) in the Progress of Women in the Profession category. The award was presented to Sylvie at the virtual Soirée de l’excellence en génie, and recognizes her commitment to promoting the advancement of women in the engineering profession.
Sylvie is just the second woman to hold the position of regional engineering director for Eastern Canada since Hatch was founded in 1955. She has built a reputation among her peers as a passionate and dynamic leader. Grounding her work in respect and equality, Sylvie is known for her open-mindedness, honesty, and diplomacy. She is a true role model for women in leadership and a source of inspiration within the company and the community.
As Sylvie oversees the delivery of engineering projects, she has the opportunity to empower women with strong leadership potential. She nominates them for key positions and helps Hatch to close in on its goal of better female representation. Passionate about fostering the next generation of engineers, Sylvie regularly participates in activities—including the OIQ's Programme des Ambassadrices and the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation (CEMF)—focused on inspiring and encouraging girls to pursue science or engineering. While she shares her career path with them and even stays in touch with some to help with their studies, her key contribution is imparting her passion for the profession.
"Sylvie has held the position of regional engineering director for Eastern Canada since 2018. I am happy that she agreed to take on this role; I never doubted the strength of her skills and I am not surprised by her exemplary performance. She is a role model, not only for our female colleagues but also for me and for our team. Her leadership, her availability, and her vision are major assets that contribute to the advancement of women at Hatch and in the profession," stated Stéphane Raymond, regional managing director for Eastern Canada.
Since graduating in civil engineering from the Université de Sherbrooke, Sylvie has held various roles on multidisciplinary projects over her thirty-year career with Hatch. She successfully forged a path in a professional environment that at the time was even more male-dominated than it is today. Not only has she risen to meet every challenge she has faced, but she has also earned a reputation among clients such as Rio Tinto and Alcoa for her in-depth expertise and efforts to deliver pragmatic solutions to complex technical and human challenges.
