John Bianchini
Chairman & CEO
John Bianchini has served as Hatch’s chief executive officer since 2012. Across a 39-year career, he leveraged his technical expertise on some of Hatch’s most challenging mining and metals projects and was appointed to the board in 2004.
As chair of the board of directors, John is the chief custodian of Hatch’s culture and manifesto. He is accountable for the reputational, social, and financial health of the organization and represents more than 12,000 professionals across 100 offices on six continents. He chairs and serves on multiple committees, including Client Care and Engagement, Executive Health and Safety, and Guided Giving, which oversees Hatch’s philanthropy and community support initiatives.
At an operational level, John works closely with the board and global leadership team to lead organizational development and ensure clients continue to receive the world-class quality of work they have come to expect from Hatch. He is responsible for the outcomes of all Hatch engagements, from small studies to large capital projects, representing more than $100 billion in projects under management.
John started his career at Hatch three days after writing the last exam of his bachelor’s degree. As his career progressed, he held several project roles within the mining and metals industry, honing his expertise in new technology implementation projects and the design, supervision, and operation of pilot plant facilities.
John has been instrumental in expanding the scope and volume of Hatch’s business throughout the world, especially in South Africa, China, Brazil, Peru, and Australia. Following his work for the QNI Rehabilitation project, he relocated to Australia for six years to serve as the regional director, then global managing director, for metals. During this time, he supported Hatch’s integrations with BHP Engineering and Kaiser Engineers.
Outside of Hatch, John takes a keen interest in the development and mentorship of young engineers. He is a dedicated supporter of universities and their engineering programs and, through Hatch, sponsors several bursaries and scholarships. As an advisory board member with the University of Toronto’s chemical engineering department, he has led seminars in engineering and project management and plays an active role in recruiting new engineers to the industry.
John speaks four languages—English, French, Italian, and Spanish. He is also deeply involved in the arts, with multiple board positions at various cultural institutions. These include seats on the board of governors at the Royal Ontario Museum, the board of directors at the Art Canada Institute, and as a member and chair of the Moonlight Gala committee with the McMichael Collection.
He holds a bachelor of applied science in chemical engineering from the University of Toronto and belongs to multiple industry organizations including Professional Engineers Ontario, the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineers, and the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. He is also a fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Academy of Engineers of Canada.
