2016-2025

Unlocked a potential $2 million in funds for the project

8.5 miles of new track connected to the existing transit network

Up to 55,000 projected daily riders by 2026

Challenges

  • To expand transit service and reduce journey times for travelers, Sound Transit is adding 8.5 miles of double track and four new light rail stations.
  • Sound Transit has taken on a role beyond providing transit; it is supporting regional growth and fostering livable communities, including transit-oriented development (TOD).
  • Sound Transit needed final design support for the rail system elements including traction power substations, overhead catenary, train control, and communication systems.
  • Vehicle procurement support and other engineered elements needed to work with other systems already in service, all contributing to overall alignment design supporting livable communities.

Solutions

  • Identified potential funding sources and assisted with the development of application packages for various grant programs, including those particularly linked to TOD.
  • Provided train control, traction power, and overhead catenary design for the light rail system along the alignment.
  • Designed communications elements, including network access layer, telephone, radio, closed-circuit television, public address, variable message signs, and access control systems for rooms and public spaces.
  • Supported Sound Transit with the procurement of the light rail vehicles, including technical specifications, inspections, testing, and commissioning services.

Highlights

  • Developed a compelling grant application package that successfully secured commitment from a housing developer to improve light access to watercourse, regardless of outside funding.
  • Created the workplan and resulting content to unlock funding contributions toward the project.
  • Design and project development resulted in seamless interfaces between existing and new components for successful operation of all systems elements.
  • Successful procurement of 162 light rail vehicles designed to operate throughout the current systems, the new Lynnwood and East Link (2 Line), and all future systems expansion alignments.
