GISTM Conformance: Simplified

Track, control, self-assess and audit

Stay in full control

Hatch Integrated Tailings Management software is designed to make it easier for you to comply with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) conformance protocols. Perform internal or external GISTM audits and monitor your progress towards meeting conformance goals over time.

The GISTM timeline to conform is fast approaching

Upon the initiation of the standard, facilities categorized as ‘extreme’ and ‘very high’ were to align with the standard by August 2023. The facilities not within these categories are slated to achieve conformity by August 2025.

What is GISTM for tailings management?

Global industry standard on tailings management (GISTM) is a recent industry standard designed to support operators in managing catastrophic risks related to tailings dam management. It places special emphasis on topics that go beyond facility design nd operations, reflecting the increasingly broad and holistic nature of the modern tailings risk. More than ever, operators are called upon to maintain comprehensive data sets and build knowledge required to address the needs of operations, communities, and regulators

Some of the key activities include prioritizing safety and preventing harm, generating evolving site knowledgebases, and improving transparency and engagement with stakeholders. To do so, the GISTM defines 77 requirements across 6 topic areas that require individual effort and evidence.

What is the scope of application?

GITSM applies to both existing and future tailings facilities, including active and inactive sites.

Operators are expected to conform to the standard where there is no conflict with the legislative requirements of the jurisdictions where the tailings facilities are located.

Emphasis on integrated approach

Adopting an integrated approach to tailings management is essential for the safety and sustainability of mining operations.

The GITSM framework promotes a holistic strategy that considers environmental, technical, and social aspects throughout the tailings facility life cycle.

Hatch for GISTM conformance

Hatch’s Integrated Tailings Management software, crafted by global tailings experts, streamlines GITSM conformance. It features a self-evaluation scorecard, efficient audit management, and progress tracking tools.
