Illuminating London’s 24-hour economy
Hatch to develop a comprehensive evidence base on the 24-hour economy in the heart of London’s West End.
London, United Kingdom – Hatch has been invited by the Heart of London Business Alliance (HOLBA) to lead an in-depth research project on the 24-hour economy of London’s West End. This initiative will enhance the area’s key placemaking indicators, highlight innovation, differentiation, and growth in its economic sectors, and deepen the overall understanding of the area as an engine of culture, commerce, and experience for London.
HOLBA, a not-for-profit organization, is dedicated to ensuring the long-term commercial and cultural prosperity of the area. Through promotion, business support, and advocacy, they champion their members' interests, maintaining the West End's status as a world-class destination.
“Heart of London Business Alliance’s purpose is to protect and promote the commercial and cultural wellbeing of London’s West End. Hatch’s innovative approach to evidence and storytelling will aid us in articulating how the Heart of London area’s unique ecosystem of businesses can accelerate growth, not just for the West End, but for London and the rest of the UK,” shared Mark Williams, deputy chief executive, Heart of London Business Alliance.
The Heart of London area is one of the most culturally rich regions in the world, located at the center of London’s West End and playing a crucial role in the UK’s heritage. The iconic Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus serve as the epicenters of London’s cinema, theatre, and entertainment industries. Piccadilly and St James’s, quintessentially British, are home to some of the world’s leading hotels, restaurants, and cultural attractions. This vibrant area employs 100,000 people, boasts a 94.8% occupancy rate, and contributes over £10 billion in gross value to the economy, along with £345 million in business rates.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with HOLBA to explore how their culture, commerce, and experience ecosystem uniquely fuels London’s growth, positioning it as a global leader for tourism and investment. HOLBA’s genuine curiosity and ambition to raise the bar on evidence-led placemaking is an example for business improvement districts, local authorities, and stakeholder groups aiming to innovate their understanding of successful places,” said Andrew Caruso, a partner and director of Hatch’s Urban Solutions team.
