Jansen potash project celebrates first cut
Saskatchewan, Canada—BHP celebrated a significant milestone at its Jansen potash project in late December, announcing that the project had successfully transitioned from shaft development into underground mine development, cutting potash outwards from the production shaft station. This takes the project closer to the first production expected in late 2026.
The Jansen potash project is located approximately 140 kilometers away from Saskatoon in Saskatchewan, Canada. Once operational, Jansen will be transformed into the largest automated potash mine in the world.
Jansen Stage 1 includes the design, engineering, and construction of an underground potash mine and surface infrastructure, including two shafts, a processing facility, a product storage building, and a continuous automated rail loading system. Next up a drum miner will cut a lateral connection between the two shafts before opening up more space underground for further mine development.
Simon Thomas, BHP’s vice president, projects potash, said, “After many years the transition from shaft development to underground mining in the production shaft is testament to the dedication and hard work of the incredible Jansen team, as well as the unwavering support from our contracting partners, the local community and the larger BHP business.”
Hatch has been involved with the Jansen project since 2009, beginning as part of the owner’s team. In 2017, we began comprehensive EPCM services as part of the Hatch-Bantrel joint venture including engineering, procurement and contracts and continue to be fully engaged for the completion of the construction, and commissioning.
“Hatch is proud to be part of this major milestone and to continue to be there in the mine and on the surface working alongside BHP and our partners bringing this project one giant step closer to production,” says Mike Fedoroff, project sponsor, Hatch.
