Hatch celebrates London Waterloo Stations WAFX Award
London, United Kingdom – November 8, 2024 – The London Waterloo Station Masterplan, a project that Hatch proudly contributed to, has been honored with the prestigious WAFX Award for Smart Cities at the World Architecture Festival (WAF). This accolade recognizes the innovative and transformative vision for the regeneration of Waterloo Station and its surrounding South Bank area.
As part of a consortium, Hatch played a pivotal role in shaping the socioeconomic and social value strategy for this landmark project. Hatch’s contributions were highlighted as a defining differentiator, underscoring the project’s commitment to creating a people-centered, sustainable, and economically vibrant urban environment.
The masterplan, led by the London Borough of Lambeth and Network Rail, envisions a world-class multimodal transport and civic hub at London Waterloo Station. This ambitious project aims to enhance connectivity, promote active travel, and support the local economy through a series of strategic improvements and upgrades.
Hatch conducted a comprehensive socioeconomic analysis of the area, providing quantitative evidence that informed the masterplan’s development. This analysis ensured that the project outcomes were authentic, responsive, and evidence-based. Hatch also facilitated social value workshops and designed audits, focusing on long-term social value strategies that address the needs of vulnerable communities. This approach went beyond procurement requirements, embedding social value considerations into the core of the masterplan.
““We applaud the Waterloo Masterplan’s commitment to evidence-led placemaking,” said Andrew Caruso, a partner at Hatch and director of its Urban Solutions practice. “By using quantitative socioeconomic evidence to yield particularly authentic, responsive, and transformative masterplan outcomes, social value considerations went beyond procurement requirements to shape the technical content of the masterplan. We aligned placemaking with key growth sectors of the local economy, creating a platform for economic inclusion to thrive.”
The London Waterloo Station Masterplan outlines a vision for long-term improvements to the station and its surroundings. Key goals include enhancing connectivity with more than 40 upgraded walking and cycling routes and 15 improved gateways, remodeling the northern entrance and adding a new southern concourse to ease passenger flow, creating inclusive and safe public spaces, introducing 1,900 m² of new green space with hundreds of trees, and developing new workspaces and employment opportunities to support the local economy.
