Ottawa, Canada - Hatch has been recognized with multiple awards at the 2024 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards (CCEA) in Ottawa, including two Awards of Excellence as well as the Ambassador Award. These prestigious accolades underscore Hatch’s dedication to delivering innovative engineering solutions that tackle complex challenges and positively impact communities around the world.

Hatch was honored with two prestigious awards for outstanding work on the Quebrada El León Flood Control Project in Peru: the Award of Excellence and the Ambassador Award. Communities along Peru’s Pacific coast have long been vulnerable to flash floods caused by intense rainfall during El Niño events, which damage infrastructure, disrupt agriculture, and threaten lives. In response to these recurring floods, Hatch partnered with local authorities to design a comprehensive flood control system aimed at mitigating the long-term risks posed by these natural disasters.

At the heart of this project is a 1,200-meter-long basin that captures floodwaters, paired with a 20-kilometer canal that safely diverts excess water to the ocean. Key technical features include a stepped canal to dissipate the force of floodwaters and a concrete discharge structure to protect nearby communities. Beyond its immediate benefits in flood mitigation, the project is expected to boost the local economy by protecting vital agricultural lands and infrastructure, creating a more stable environment for development.

This flood control system enhances the safety of the region and provides long-term security and peace of mind to the people who live and work there, allowing for sustainable growth and enduring prosperity.

Hatch’s second Award of Excellence recognized our pivotal role in the Mount Royal Tunnel-Double Arch Replacement and Rehabilitation Project in Montréal, Canada. A vital component of the city’s Réseau express métropolitain (REM), the Mount Royal Tunnel required significant modernization to meet current safety and operational standards without disrupting daily train services. To address this challenge, Hatch, in a joint venture, used the innovative "Sequential Demolition Method," allowing for the construction of a new tunnel within the existing structure while maintaining operations.

Upgraded ventilation systems and track reinforcements were added to align the tunnel with modern standards while the project team navigated significant safety risks, including the discovery of explosive residue from the tunnel’s original construction in 1918. To manage this risk, Hatch developed advanced safety protocols and engineering solutions, ensuring the safety of workers, commuters, and the surrounding community.

The project preserved a key piece of Montréal’s historic infrastructure and ensured that it will continue to serve the city safely and efficiently for decades to come.

"We are honored to receive these prestigious awards," commented Pierre Olivier, Regional Managing Director, Eastern Canada. "These projects exemplify our ability to navigate complex engineering environments and deliver sustainable solutions that enhance both community resilience and infrastructure."

With a range of projects recognized at this year’s CCEA, Hatch’s success showcases the company’s capacity to deliver forward-thinking engineering solutions across a variety of sectors and geographies. The recognition at the 2024 CCEA reinforces our ongoing commitment to create unprecedented outcomes and bring positive change and meaningful impact to the communities we serve.
