Geneva, Switzerland - We are thrilled to announce that the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) South Shore segment has been awarded the prestigious Project Award 2024 in the megaprojects category from FIDIC, the International Federation of Consulting Engineers. This recognition highlights the project's outstanding contributions to enhancing social, economic, and environmental quality of life.

On Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at the Global Infrastructure Conference Gala in Geneva, FIDIC announced that the REM - South Shore segment in Montréal, Canada, was awarded best FIDIC Project Award 2024 among the 15 worldwide finalists. This award showcases, rewards, and promotes the achievements and successes of consulting engineering member firms and their clients, highlighting the important impact the projects have on social, economic, and environmental quality of life.

CDPQ Infra selected CIMA+ and Hatch (CCH) as owner’s engineers to conduct the project’s preliminary studies, environmental study, the design of the Mount Royal Tunnel rehabilitation, and the overall preliminary conceptual design. We also prepared the tender documents for a design-build and later performed the detailed design reviews and oversaw implementation, technical support, site supervision, related projects procurement, project controls, and overall monitoring. CCH partnered with the client in all three segments of the project.

The South Shore segment of the REM project aims to modernize transportation between downtown Montreal and the South Shore, addressing growing mobility needs through a sustainable, automated system. This complex endeavor required coordination with multiple government and private-sector stakeholders to minimize environmental impacts in a dense urban environment. The project adopted an agile, collaborative approach to adapt to changes, including those caused by the pandemic. The REM promotes sustainability by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 16,800 tonnes annually and generating significant social and economic benefits, including job creation, improved public transit, urban development, and reduced car dependency.

Jean-Christophe Belisle, Hatch’s regional director, Infrastructure, stated, “The REM South Shore segment receiving the FIDIC Project Award 2024 is a testament to the dedication and collaborative efforts of our team, our partners, and CDPQ Infra. This recognition exemplifies Hatch’s commitment to delivering sustainable and innovative infrastructure solutions that enhance the quality of life for communities. The award celebrates the engineering excellence and hard work involved, underscoring the significant social, economic, and environmental benefits the project brings. We are proud to have played a role in modernizing transportation in Montreal and contributing to a greener, more connected future."
Commenting on the list of projects, FIDIC President Catherine Karakatsanis shared, “Given the range and quality of the entries we received from around the world, our judging panel certainly had its work cut out. The list of projects receiving recognition in Geneva in September reflects the excellence of the work of consulting engineers and the value that the whole engineering, construction, and infrastructure industry brings to society by delivering world-class projects. It also demonstrates the vital impact that these projects have in making a positive difference to people’s lives.”

The FIDIC is the global representative body for national associations of consulting engineers and represents more than one million engineering professionals and 40,000 firms in 100 countries worldwide.
