Hatch and the Center for Studies in Ecosystem Restoration partner to improve environmental management in Brazil
Aimores, Brazil—Hatch has announced a new partnership with the Center for Studies in Ecosystem Restoration, a program affiliated with the Center for Education and Environmental Recovery (CERA) at Instituto Terra. The Center’s goal is to develop the training specialized technical professionals through practical activities and socio-environmental awareness, primarily focusing on the Doce River Valley.
The Doce River Valley is located in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state in southern Brazil. The basin is home to many mining and metals complexes and is of great economic and environment importance to the region.
The Center for Studies in Ecosystem Restoration trains new professionals to work in the region and promote the current model of environmental management for ecological restoration, aiming to improve the quality of life for the regions’s rural populations.
The course is offered free of charge to young people from the Doce River Valley region. In addition to technical training, students receive a scholarship, accommodation, and meals during their stay. The course lasts eleven months, totaling 2,000 hours. Its distinctive feature is the distribution of activities, with 80% being practical and 20% theoretical, aiming to enhance and complement the technical education of students, mostly from rural areas.
Established more than 15 years ago, the Center for Studies in Ecosystem Restoration is one of the pillars of the institution because we believe that only through education can we create a better future.
Hatch, a global engineering, project and construction management, and professional services firm with more than six decades of business and technical experience in the mining, energy, and infrastructure sectors, has partnered with the center as they share the vision of pursuing a better world through positive change.
As a long-standing trusted advisor to their clients, Hatch is proactive in ensuring that the company does their part to conquer climate change and preserve biodiversity. In addition to Hatch’s evidence-based approach in applying practical solutions to maintain and sustainably develop communities, the company partners with organizations that are mitigating climate change and conserving the environment through education, outreach, and their own preventative programs.
“We are excited to embark on a meaningful partnership with the Centre for Studies in Ecosystem Restoration, a program dedicated to cultivating the next wave of environmental professionals. At Hatch, we believe in positive change, and through this collaboration, we aim to accelerate Hatch and the center’s shared commitment to environmental sustainability and support of the next generation of environmentalists and scientists,” says Kezer Almeida, Hatch’s country manager in Brazil.
“The partnership with Hatch extends the benefits of the Center for Studies in Ecosystem Restoration, allowing us to expand the number of young people in training, improve the environmental setting, and offer additional benefits and incentives such as English courses, category B driver’s license, cultural and sports activities, specialized courses, emotional health, and many others,” shared Jeieli M. Capettini, education and people manager, Instituto Terra. “It’s through visionary partners like Hatch that we can raise awareness among young people and change the behavior of an entire chain of production and information.”

About Sebastião Salgado – Founder Instituto Terra
Born in Aimorés, Brazil, Sebastião Salgado trained as an economist before becoming a photographer in the early 1970s. He earned a master's degree in economics from the University of São Paulo in 1968 and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Paris in 1971. His work required him to make frequent trips to Africa, and his desire to document these experiences sparked his interest in photography.
In 1974 he worked as a freelance photojournalist. Salgado has produced several extensive documentary series throughout his career, several of which have been published. These include Sahel: L'homme en détresse (1986), Other Americas (1986), An Uncertain Grace (1990), and Workers (1993), a worldwide investigation into the growing obsolescence of manual labor.
Salgado has won many honors for his work, including the Eugene Smith Prize for Humanitarian Photography, two ICP Infinity Awards for Journalism, the Erna and Victor Hasselblad Prize, and the Arles International Festival award for best photography book of the year for Workers.
Sebastião Salgado’s simple photographs portray people living in desperate economic circumstances. His photographs convey the dignity and integrity of his subjects without forcing their heroism or implicitly soliciting compassion. Salgado’s photography communicates a subtle understanding of social and economic situations that is rarely available in other photographers’ depictions of similar subjects. about Hatch
