Dr Bert Wasmund receives the Selwyn Blaylock Canadian Mining Excellence Award
Mississauga, Canada—Dr. Bert Wasmund, executive director at Hatch, was the recipient of this year’s Selwyn Blaylock Canadian Mining Excellence Award. This award celebrates an individual’s distinguished service to Canada through exceptional achievement in the field of mining, metallurgy, or geology.
Each year, the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum recognizes star-performers from the mining and mineral industry with the CIM-Caterpillar Celebration of Excellence Awards. The ceremony took place virtually on April 30, 2021, and honored organizations and individuals who push the industry forward as leaders within the field.
Dr. Wasmund is a world-renowned leader in metallurgical plant engineering and design, an innovator, philanthropist, and long-time mentor to fellow industry experts. Raised on a farm in Monteagle, near Bancroft, Ontario, Dr. Wasmund attended a one-room public school. He went on to Queen's University, earning his BSc and MSc degrees in Chemical Engineering in 1961 and 1963, respectively followed by a PhD, Chemical Engineering, from the University of Toronto in 1966
Dr. Wasmund, who joined Hatch in 1966, remains active on client work today. Bert is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a inductee to the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame, and a Member of the Order of Canada, among many other industry accolades.
