John Bianchini
Chairman & CEO
John currently holds the role of chair and chief executive officer of Hatch, only the fourth individual to do so in the company’s 70-year history. Under John’s 40 years of leadership, Hatch has grown and diversified its professional services, providing innovative and practical solutions to its global clientele in the metals, energy, and infrastructure sectors. Currently John leads our global organization of 12,000 talented employees in more than 100 offices on six continents who importantly advise, design, manage, and build more than $100 billion of our clients’ assets.
Over his many years with Hatch, John has held several roles in the development of innovative and first-of-their-kind technologies. These new solutions were an important and strong foundation for our executive leadership to establish long-term trusted relationships with our valued private and public clients in all three of our market sectors.
John helped develop several generations of leadership at Hatch through the creation of a framework for our current leadership development program. His ability to mentor and challenge our young professionals to aspire to higher levels of leadership is especially noted, and many of our current senior leadership, including other board members, were mentored by John.
John holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto. After graduating, he joined Hatch in 1985 and developed his hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical expertise in extractive process metallurgy by researching, developing, and engineering solutions to some of the most challenging problems for Hatch’s clients. John travelled globally throughout his career, initially to develop and improve metallurgical processing facilities as Hatch expanded in the 1980s and 1990s to service an expanding client base in North America, Asia, Oceania, and South America.
As Hatch established a permanent presence throughout the world, John and his family dedicated themselves to the growth and development of our corporate capabilities by living amongst our clients and employees throughout Canada, South Africa, and later Australia. He was a key part of expanding Hatch’s business to Brazil, China, and Europe. This global and industry experience allowed John to serve many roles: managing director of Base Metals, global managing director of Mining and Metals, director of our group board, chief executive and chair, as well as director of various joint ventures in Hatch’s Infrastructure, Oil and Gas, and Power businesses.
John has transformed our corporate brand since he began his CEO tenure. Under his direction, our reputation for creating “positive change” based on technical excellence in engineering, innovation, and predictable, project delivery outcomes is well known by clients. Equally, our corporate brand has become consistent with social relevance based on our contributions to the communities in which we work and live, our extensive scholarship and research programs with many global STEM institutions, and our sponsorship and philanthropic contributions to health care, the arts, and other charitable programs.
John and his family are avid supporters and philanthropic contributors to the arts community. He has made significant contributions to the support of institutions, galleries, and individual artists in Canada and beyond. Through John’s personal and corporate donations, he has enabled galleries to feature and support emerging artists. John has served on the Board of Governors for the Royal Ontario Museum, as well as the Art Canada Institute, and has been a supporter and advisor to the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto, the Toronto Biennial of Art, and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
John lives with his wife Katia and his two daughters in the Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area.
