Jean-François is a senior piping engineer for Hatch’s project delivery group based in our Montréal, Canada office. 

Since joining Hatch, he has become a strong advocate for workplace diversity and inclusion, having helped pioneer Hatch’s Diversity and Inclusion committee both regionally and globally.

Jean-François was one of the recipients of the 2024 Positive Change Awards, a program to recognize employees who contribute to building Hatch’s inclusive organization, who exemplify the values of our Manifesto, and who actively work towards strengthening our diverse teams. 

Why do you believe in diversity and inclusion? 

A while ago I read that “people who are half themselves are half productive and half happy.” If we want to bring out the best of everyone, we need to create an environment where all can grow freely without any fear of being put aside. 

What do you think we need to do as individuals to improve inclusivity?

We should expand our knowledge as much as possible and be aware of our own unconscious biases. We can reduce these biases by becoming empathetic leaders.  

What does positive change mean to you?

Positive change means bringing the best out of ourselves and everyone around us. We should make sure to always approach our colleagues and clients with empathy.

What do you think are the toughest challenges facing our clients?

The biggest challenge for our clients is to make sure that all employees feel engaged with the project. Empathy and leadership will grow once everyone feels like they belong and are being treated with respect.

What are you most proud of?

One thing that has made me proud was my involvement in the creation of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Many of the ideas I proposed at the time are still being used both regionally and globally across the company. 

What do you like most about working at Hatch? How do you think the Hatch culture is different from other companies? 

Hatch is a Manifesto-driven company and encourages values that push for diversity and inclusion. Working for a flat organization such as Hatch is helpful as it is easy to ask questions and propose new ideas.
